Fellow Empresses, How the hell are you?
I was thinking today about the Empress Archetype and why it’s so powerful for asserting the cultural visibility of midlife women and it made me think of something Elise Loehnen references in her work—it takes the ME of this incredibly transformative, liminal, messy time of life and makes it about the WE. Something writers need to do more of in their work… if only to show how none of us is in this alone. We are all Empresses—together.
And, hair IS everything…
Some of us are losing it by the handful, some of us are newly embracing our gray, and some of us are seeing wild changes in texture altogether. These days, I only shampoo my hair twice a week… I simply don’t perspire the way I used to now that I’m post-menopausal.
Empress hair hack: on wash days, dedicate a couple of minutes before stepping into the shower to gently, but fully brush out your hair with a natural bristle brush. This simple act not only feels soooooo good, but it also encourages the distribution of nourishing oils from the scalp to the strands, while simultaneously removing any accumulated buildup, strands, and debris, ensuring a more thorough cleanse with less stripping. Your conditioner will also absorb better. Lastly, your plumbing will thank you. Consider it akin to Gwyneth’s dry brushing your body before bathing, but tailored for your scalp.
(Did I tell you we named our bear Gwyneth? She keeps eating all the chickens. Bone broth, we lament.)
Another great find this week:
This deep tissue Fascia Roller for $12 is making it possible for me to get through all of my book edits, which have me stuck in the chair, hunched over pages, or a hot laptop for hours at a time.
For those of you in The Empress Book Club, reading Kirsten Miller’s The Change, don’t forget our author Zoom with her on May 4th, 2024 - 11 am (PT) / 2 pm (ET). Register here!

How big is that fascia roller? It’s hard to tell from the pic. Great idea. I get so stiff from sitting for long periods of time.
