Iโ€™m pretty sure Iโ€™m perimenopausal but either way, Iโ€™m nearing actual menopause age. Your Substack is so helpful in making me feel prepared when it does finally come full on. Appreciate it ๐Ÿค—

YES! I've been following her work for a few years and was so excited to get the book. I just listened to a good interview with Dr Mosconi, where she breaks some of this down in a simple way, and it left me feeling excited about getting to the other side of the transition, something I don't think was on my radar before: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-upsides-of-menopause-lisa-mosconi-phd/id1585015034?i=1000649160028

My friends and I did not have this much information about menopause but were suprised by finding our keys in the freezer, mood swings, dry pasty skin, and a slowly bulging waistline. My doc told me he could tell all the women in his waiting room going through meopause by their complexion , and onlly warned me about the redistribution of weight to my waistline. I think I started sit-ups to defy him! When I asked my mother about menopause she said she went through it in one afternoon. This statement made the NYtimes. I say the worst symptom is SANDPAPER SEX, which could surprise you at any time. OMG it was a huge life shift and fucking painful. Thankfully they are talking about it now and have new ways around this horror and it is a horror if you ever want to have sex again.! Beware the atrophying vagina.... Happy it has become part of the conversation but women please do not think post meopause is the promised land; it's jus more land.

My god, before HRT... I fully expected Lawrence of Arabia to come trotting out of my vagina astride a camel at my last appointment. For those with sparkly boobs and risk profiles that don't make HRT a wise choice, I've been advised that world's greatest lube for a menopausal women experiencing sandpaper sex is a product called Elbow Grease https://amzn.to/3x8eRSo Yes, though it's marketed to dudes, word is it does wonders for the menopausal female vag. Sounds like a wonderfully well researched book. I need a book on Hashimotos brain. My doc just lowered my thyroid med and I have serious brain fog.

One of her partners just agreed to be interviewed for The Empress for the book so shoot me any questions you might have in this area and I'll be sure to ask them. xo

Congrats!

If sheโ€™s not a Hashimotos expert thereโ€™s not much she can answer. I know all about diet, exercise and supplements. Thx. ๐Ÿ™

You know, I have zero idea--we'll be talking about Lisa's book, dementia, and cognitive screening, but I'll be posting the zoom here and after doing so many of these I find, people always surprise me... if I stay curious enough. We should have a great session on homeopathy coming soon! xo

โ€œThe brain discards unnecessary connections and neurons, leading to a leaner and more efficient cognitive system.โ€

This is how Iโ€™m going to reframe my changed brain story. I simply discarded neurons and connections I no longer needed. Beautiful. My brain unlearned those things that were no longer serving it. Ta Da!

Exactly! I'm going to be following this up with other practical unlearning exercises and interviews--I think we're only just beginning understand things with the female brain :)

I've already ordered this book and cannot wait to read it. Finally - an opportunity to understand how our brains can be upgraded during peri/menopause! Recently, I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Mosconi speak live; she did not disappoint. After the lecture, I felt full of hope for the changes my brain is going through during this stage of life.

So encouraging! Imagine entire generations of women reframing our experience of midlife--rather than living with self-doubt!

โ€œA leaner, more efficient cognitive system.โ€ What an important reframe for us all. I co-host a podcast for the vestibular community and we recently did an episode on dizziness and peri/menopause. The expert, a leading neurotologist and surgeon in the area of dizziness sees a correlation between hormonal shifts and a womanโ€™s balance centers, for some, menopause increases dizziness, for others, it resolves. Iโ€™m holding out for the latter!
