Fellow Empresses, Happy First Day of Spring!
It’s no secret that I have a special interest in “all things brain” because my seizure disorder coincided with perimenopause. However, for far too long, women's health has been overlooked in medical research, leading to inadequate care and understanding of our unique needs. This disparity is especially evident when it comes to the female brain. Women face a myriad of neurological challenges, from higher rates of depression and anxiety to increased risk of brain-related conditions like Alzheimer's disease. The lack of sex-specific research has left many women feeling misunderstood and underserved in their healthcare journey.
However, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Initiatives like the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research are stepping up to address this gap, injecting much-needed funding into studies that focus on women's health concerns. This shift in focus is crucial in providing women and their healthcare providers with the answers they need and deserve.
One pioneering scientist leading the charge in women's brain health is neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi. Through her groundbreaking research, Dr. Mosconi has uncovered the intricate ways in which menopause impacts the female brain. In her latest book, The Menopause Brain, she dives deep into the transformative effects of menopause on brain health and offers empowering insights for women navigating this stage of life.
Dr. Mosconi's research highlights the undeniable connection between menopause and changes in brain function. The hormonal shifts during menopause not only affect reproductive systems but also influence body temperature, mood, memory, and cognitive abilities. Understanding these changes is crucial for women to effectively manage their symptoms, prevent cognitive decline, and emerge from menopause with a resilient and healthy brain.
One of the key revelations from Dr. Mosconi's work is the importance of acknowledging menopause as a neurologically active period. While menopause can bring challenges such as hot flashes, insomnia, and mood swings, it also presents an opportunity for the brain to undergo a "renovation" process.
The brain discards unnecessary connections and neurons, leading to a leaner and more efficient cognitive system.
Contrary to the cultural narrative that portrays menopause as a decline or deficiency, Dr. Mosconi emphasizes the positive aspects of this phase. Many women report feeling liberated and experiencing newfound clarity and focus post-menopause. The reduction in hormonal fluctuations can also contribute to improved emotional well-being and a deeper connection with oneself.
In addition to her research findings, Dr. Mosconi advocates for a holistic approach to brain health during menopause. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep quality, stress management, and minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals can all play a significant role in supporting cognitive function and reducing the risk of cognitive decline later in life.
While Dr. Mosconi acknowledges that hormone therapy may be a viable option for some women experiencing severe menopausal symptoms, she emphasizes the importance of personalized healthcare decisions based on individual needs and consultation with trusted healthcare providers. In my case, a low dose of HRT proved the answer to addressing my symptoms and helping to regulate my seizures.
The Menopause Brain serves up a wealth of knowledge and agency for women navigating the complexities of menopause. By understanding the menopause-brain connection and embracing more proactive measures, women can embark on this transformative journey with confidence and resilience. Dr. Mosconi's book not only sparks crucial conversations about menopause but also underscores the importance of prioritizing women's health and well-being in medical research and healthcare practices.
In this way, it’s not just a book—it's a manifesto for reclaiming the narrative around menopause and empowering women to embrace this phase of life with grace and strength. It's a reminder that women's health matters more than ever and our voices deserve to be heard and valued in every aspect of healthcare and society at large.

I’m pretty sure I’m perimenopausal but either way, I’m nearing actual menopause age. Your Substack is so helpful in making me feel prepared when it does finally come full on. Appreciate it 🤗
YES! I've been following her work for a few years and was so excited to get the book. I just listened to a good interview with Dr Mosconi, where she breaks some of this down in a simple way, and it left me feeling excited about getting to the other side of the transition, something I don't think was on my radar before: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-upsides-of-menopause-lisa-mosconi-phd/id1585015034?i=1000649160028
