My hubby and I are my father-in-law's long term plan. He moved in with us two years ago - it hasn't been easy, but we're all happy. I'm hoping to stay healthy enough to remain independent. So far, so good, and my 80 year old mother is doing just fine. But my son has already announced that we're moving in with HIM if we get too frail to take care of ourselves... I'm not sure he knows what he's agreeing to, though, he doesn't see the scary/messy/frustrating side of caretaking. Rooming with my sister might be another option. Medicare only pays for two visiting nurse visits per week, though....

You know, having been through serious caregiving of an ill parent... I don't think you realize how intense it is until you are right IN it and IN it and IN it... and then you're like, oh my goodness, I need to make sure I get my own act together :)

Oh yeah... luckily I used to be a nursing aide, so the actual work isn't too shocking, but it's a lot tougher when caring for a relative at home because there is no second or third shift coming in to take over, it's 24-7. Also, it was difficult seeing residents in the nursing home suffer, but it's a million times harder when the sufferer is a loved one.

Kelly is an amazing resource for so many questions. This is a part of my own life where I still have SO much to organize.
