Darlin' send me your address and I will send you a copy of my book on menopause -Gonepausal. It's my funny take on this time of life. My mother told me she went through it in one afternoon.
Dear god, I needed this! The question hit me early, in my teens: what does it mean to be a woman unbound? Unbound = truly free, and Iโve always LOVED that word in that context, although I canโt claim to have fully embodied its full potential (yet!). I actually think this idea has always informed my politics, in my advocacy for womenโs rights to abortion care, healthcare and pay equity, because these things are foundational for womenโs freedom. But as I just turned 50 Iโm far more conscious of the context you expressed in this piece, as it relates to all the unaddressed/untreated physical and mental health issues that GenX women were never given the support to process and treat. In any case, BRAVA for bringing so much candor and insight to every single fucking post ๐๐๐
Thank you for this. Truth be told... am in sooooooooo much pain this morning from fractured cheek bone that may need more antibiotics. Off to docs, (ironically) but your words bolster me so much. xo
Brilliant Alisa. For someone that is addled by meds and can't speak or eat solid food, you sure hit this out of the Bridgerton park. I felt the cinching of those straps hard for so many years. And damn it was hard to take a breath. My health challenges, the ones that brought me to my knees, ultimately broke the laces and straps. To where I can fully breathe. The corset is gone. Along with the bras. Anything that feels binding--in any way, physically, mentally or spiritually. Gone. And good riddance.
Huzzah! I think the thing is about these posts rn is that they take me 5x as long to write--just conjuring the correct words, spelling, syntax, links, etc. But I LOVE that you feel this way finally about the things that were corseting you. I want us all to experience this freedom and agency--however we individually define it--you know? And good riddance to whale bone... let it stay where it belongs--in the sea with the rest of the cetaceans. Perhaps, instead of influencer "unboxing videos" of anti-aging products... Maybe we shift to unbinding videos? Just a thought. xo.
